Home Office Deductions

I work from my home office in Mount Martha .

Do you work from home too?

The ATO have changed the fixed rate and record keeping requirements to claim a deduction for home office expenses.

From the 1st of March 2023, you will need to keep a diary record of actual hours worked from home - we can no longer make an estimate. Your record should have the date and hours working from home, and kept as they occur. Records could include a diary for the full year, time sheets, rosters, or logs of time spent accessing employer or business systems.

For the 2022–23 income year, the new fixed rate is 67 cents per work hour and incorporates the following usage expenses:

  • electricity

  • gas

  • stationery

  • computer consumables, such as printer ink

  • internet

  • phone.

You can't claim an additional separate deduction for the expenses covered by the rate per work hour.

You can separately claim a deduction for depreciating assets, such as laptops, mobile phones and office furniture.

The other method of calculating the actual work-related portion of all running expenses is unchanged, and includes keeping detailed records for all the working from home expenses being claimed.
