Car Expenses

There are two ways to claim your work-related car expenses.

You can claim 78 cents per km (2023 rate) travelled for work duties based on your diary records, up to a maximum of 5,000 km.  This rate covers the depreciation of your vehicle, fuel, repairs and maintenance, and insurance.

The other method is based on your 12 week logbook record.  You will need to log all personal and work-related travel with the date and odometer readings.  It is quite a job to do, however once done, the logbook record is valid for 5 years unless your circumstances change.  The logbook record determines the work use percentage that we can claim on all of your car expenses for the year.
